'Bears of Sheffield' come to Park Hill

27 August 2021
A 3 minute read by David Lewus

If you go down to Park Hill today you’re sure of a big surprise because…….there are two life size bear sculptures there!

Urban Splash is supporting The Children’s Hospital Charity Sheffield in their city-wide ‘Bears of Sheffield’ sculpture trail that is raising money for their current appeal to raise £2.75m to transform the Cancer and Leukaemia ward at Sheffield’s Children’s Hospital.

The trail is made up of 60 Big Bears which are sponsored by companies and decorated by professional artists and 100 Little Bears which are fundraised for and decorated by schools, college and nursery pupils.

Bear Queen by artist Laura Aldridge at Park Hill in Sheffield

Park Hill has two bears. Bear Queen by artist Laura Aldridge is on the landscaped area of Phase 1. Her design is a celebration of the Bear itself, whose head is adorned with a ceramic floral wreath as a sign of honour to the other Bears.

Doug by artist Jo Peel at Park Hill in Sheffield

Our second bear is outside the main entrance to Park Hill (where Dr Who’s Tardis was in 2018!) and is called Doug decorated by artist Jo Peel. Doug is a carefully considered composition that urges the viewer to look at the environment around them and think about its past, present and future.

The bears will be with us until 29 September and after that Bear Queen and Doug will be auctioned off to raise even more money for the charity.

We’ve already had lots of visitors passing through Park Hill to meet and greet our bears.

We wish the charity every success for this excellent cause.
