Four architectural award nominations for our Urban Splash places

28 February 2023
A 3 minute read by Tom Bloxham

Several prestigious awards have been announced this month – with our Urban Splash places making the shortlist at a number of ceremonies; including the RIBA, Architects Journal – and the Olivier Awards!

First up, industry magazine Architects Journal released the nominations for its annual AJ Retrofit Awards this week – and it was great to see some of our Urban Splash places on there. The awards recognise and celebrate the design expertise behind the vital renewal and repurposing of existing buildings, setting a precedent for ways to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint in the process. Here’s a rundown of the Urban Splash buildings on this year’s list.

Park Hill in Sheffield

Park Hill in Sheffield has been shortlisted for two awards – the Housing category and the Listed Buildings category.

The nomination is recognition of the recently completed second phase at Park Hill which comprised 195 new homes. We created them with the design help of Stirling Prize winning architects Mikhail Riches who took a ‘light touch’ approach to retaining the concrete frame, brickwork and party walls, reconfiguring internal layouts to meet the needs of modern residents.

The nominations are the latest successes for Park Hill which has also won two British Homes Awards, an Inside Housing Development Award and a Sheffield Design Award this past year.

Avro in Manchester

Completed in 2021, Avro saw us restore Brownfield Mill, once home to the AV Roe aviation company – a pioneering business that created WW2 planes from central Manchester.

Built in 1825 and bearing all the hallmarks of an Urban Splash building, exposed brickwork, beams and cast-iron columns, we teamed up with architects Stephenson STUDIO to bring the space back into use. The result is 31 traditional, canal side loft apartments; some of the biggest in Manchester.

Derwent House in Birmingham

We don’t only create great buildings, but we also invest in good architecture. That’s why in late 2022 the Urban Splash Residential Fund acquired Derwent House from Birmingham based developer Javelin Block whose impressive restoration of the listed building in the city’s Jewellery Quarter has also been shortlisted for the awards.

Beton House at Park Hill in Sheffield

This month also saw the announcement of RIBA Awards in regions across the country, and our partner Alumno Developments’ work at Park Hill has been nominated for a RIBA Yorkshire award. Beton House is a completed phase at Park Hill offering student accommodation and was completed by Alumno in 2021 – adding to the phases we and our partners Places for People have already completed there.

And though we’ve never tread the boards, Park Hill is being recognised in this year’s Olivier Awards. The hugely successful Richard Hawley play, currently showing at the National Theatre in London, has been nominated for eight of the industry’s most prestigious accolades – including Best Musical.
