From regeneration to fermentation; our special anniversary beer with JW Lees

13 September 2018
A 3 minute read by Rachel Thomas

For our 25th birthday we wanted to do something a bit special, and for our 90’s rave themed party we decided to collaborate with our brewing pals at JW Lees.

If you’re reading this and don’t know who they are, then hang your head in shame, as they are the masters of the brew. Founded in 1828 by retired cotton manufacturer, John Lees, who decided to buy land at Middleton Junction and set up Greengate Brewery. Since then they’ve stayed true to their roots and brewed all their beers right here in Manchester and they currently have over 140 pubs across the North West of England and North Wales.

After a few discussions (and samples…), they created a delicious 4.1% pale ale for our anniversary year; brewed with all British malt plus two American hops the beer apparently “imparted bitterness and aroma”. We decided to go with a pale ale as they’re fruitier beers with light malt (sweet) flavours and a pleasantly dry, often bitter aftertaste, plus we were expertly informed it would be a good match for a top notch curry. Not quite sure if anyone actually did manage to stagger into a curry house following our epic party though – but nice one if you did.

As much as we love a drink, we’ve got to admit we’re more regeneration than fermentation... but we certainly know how a damn good beer tastes so a huge thanks to JW Lees for creating a very special beverage to match our very special celebration.

There’s some of the beers left at our head office actually, so next time you’re in Manchester, why not pop in for a chat at beer o’clock? The next round is on US.
