Urban Splash Newsplash - June 2024

05 June 2024
A 5 minute read by Tom Bloxham

Welcome to our June edition of Newsplash – a round-up of all things Urban Splash.

In this month's issue, there's news from Park Hill in Sheffield, where we've added to our total of RIBA awards. There's an update from Birmingham, where out new Mansion House homes will soon be on sale. We've got the views of journalist Jo Smit, reflecting on three decades of Urban Splash regeneration, and we've also been helping to shape the industry conversation at UKREiiF. Read on to find out more.

Park Hill in Sheffield

Park Hill is an RIBA winner once more

Park Hill in Sheffield has won its 38th award – the 2024 RIBA Yorkshire Award! Judges commended the “ongoing restoration” of the “iconic building,” highlighting that the design “preserved as much of the original structure and character as possible” while also awarding designer Alim Saleh the Yorkshire Project Architect of the Year accolade for his work at the scheme. Further good news came for Park Hill as it was included in Historic England’s Heritage Works for Housing project too.

Mansion House homes coming soon to Port Loop

New homes will soon be on sale at Port Loop, Birmingham

Urban Splash, in partnership with Places for People, will soon release the first new homes for sale at Mansion House, the latest addition to Port Loop in Birmingham. In anticipation of the launch, we have appointed local agents Connells to market the new homes – 58 apartments with views over the canal, close to South Loop Park, Ladywood Leisure Centre, and YARD, the city's first Art House for local people. If you’re interested in moving in, register your interest below. We will also be collaborating on a show home in the coming weeks.

Transforming the derelict into the desirable

Jo Smit, is a renowned journalist specialising in the built environment, writing for trade titles such as RIBA Journal. We recently invited Jo to give her views on the history of Urban Splash, reflecting on three decades of true regeneration, of adding value and – as Jo says – “converting the buildings that others spurred – transforming the derelict into the desirable”.

Shaping the industry conversation

Colleagues attended the annual UKREiiF property event in Leeds this week – with CEO Julian Curnuck, Suzy Jones and Akeel Malik each taking to the stage to contribute on various panels, something you can read about in Julian’s newest blog. Our colleagues will continue to contribute to key conversations in the coming weeks, including at Housing Today Live in Manchester, where Suzy Jones will discuss the future of housing policy and priorities ahead of the general election.

SevenThreeOne at Boat Shed, Salford Quays

“I’ve been an admirer of Urban Splash for years”

An extraordinary organisation requires an extraordinary workspace, and Boat Shed at Salford Quays has proved just that for founders of SevenThreeOne, sisters Vanice and Venessa Scott. This month we interviewed, Venessa – currently featuring alongside our Chair Tom Bloxham MBE in the Greater Mancunians exhibition – as she told us what makes Boat Shed so special and why it was the undisputed first choice for their inspirational non-profit business to settle in.
