Royal William Yard

Plymouth

Historic Plymouth destination

Royal William Yard is the most exciting mixed-use neighbourhood in Plymouth, situated on a 15-acre site with its own marina and dramatic views across Plymouth Sound.

The yard was originally constructed between 1825 and 1831 as a British Navy victualling facility (which, for those of you not up on your military history, means it was where the navy’s food, drink and supplies were processed).

The design led redevelopment of Royal William Yard has made it one of the South West’s most talked about places and its now a buzzing neighbourhood full of homes, restaurants, bars, a cinema, offices, artists spaces and a hotel. Its 215 apartments and 115,000 sq. ft. of commercial space house a vibrant mix of people and businesses. Plus, a programme of markets, cultural events and exhibitions bring thousands more to visit throughout the year.

With spaces suitable for anything from start-ups, pop-up coffee shops to large restaurants or established businesses, this is a place where you can feel at home, attract quality staff and watch your business thrive. We look forward to helping you be part of it.

The award winning architects, Ferguson Mann, and now Gillespie Yunnie have designed the buildings to maximise flexibility and provide for a modern office, retail and restaurant environment, yet retain as many of the original features of the building as possible.

Described by WhatHouse as “possibly the South West’s most stunning development”, it breathes new life into one of Britain’s most important groups of historic military buildings. Now home to a bustling community, Royal William Yard is a place where offices, apartments, restaurants, bars, leisure businesses and galleries rub shoulders, as waves lap the shore on three sides.

Steeped in history

The yard was the major victualling depot of the Royal Navy and an important adjunct of Devonport Dockyard following the Napoleonic Wars.

Designed by the architect Sir John Rennie and named after King William IV the impressive site occupies approximately 16 acres (65,000 m2) being half of Western Kings, north of Devil's Point. Grade I listed, it was converted to an up-market mixed use development by Urban Splash.

Described as the grandest of the royal victualling yards, 'in its externally largely unaltered state it remains today one of the most magnificent industrial monuments in the country'.
