Anchor's down! As Smith's Dock is formally launched in North Shields

20 October 2016

An exciting voyage between joint venture partners Places for People and Urban Splash culminated today at the formal launch of Smith’s Dock in North Shields.

In a nod to the site’s distinct maritime history, dignitaries, guests and local residents gathered on the Shields Ferry to see the site from the water. Once aboard, they were treated to a journey around the River Tyne plus an exclusive screening of an inspiring short film about Smith’s Dock; created by Urban Splash and Places for People, it is fittingly narrated by North East actress Jill Halfpenny.

Places for People Group Director, Placemaking and Regeneration, Mary Parsons explained: “The maritime history of Smith’s Dock was and still is our original inspiration, so what better way to launch than on the River Tyne.
“The historical site dates back to 1851 and we’ve worked hard with groups and organisations in the local area to incorporate that heritage into our plans; we share in that local pride and hopefully our celebration of it is conveyed in the film.”

The launch comes as North East agent Sanderson Young was appointed to handle sales of the first ever homes at the scheme, when 34 hoUSes, will be brought to the market. The unique modular homes offer customers a choice of layouts within either two or three storey properties of up to 1,500 sq ft.

There are also plans for waterside apartments, 80 of which – known as the Smokehouses – already have planning consent, family homes, a river park, watersports and retail areas.
Speaking at the launch Mark Latham of Urban Splash added: “We know people have been very excited about what’s going to be created at the newly redeveloped Smith’s Dock and it’s great to be sharing our vision for this beautiful waterfront addition to North Shields.”
The news comes soon after Places for People was named Residential Company of the Year at the Estates Gazette Awards. The judges commended Places for People's placemaking approach, which was described as a blueprint for how housing providers could help solve the UK's housing crisis. The company also recently won five Placemaking and Planning awards, including three for its development of Park Hill in partnership with Urban Splash.

Prices for hoUSe will be announced in autumn 2016. For enquiries about purchasing opportunities please contact 0191 580 7999 at Sanderson Young.
