Civic Trust Award for Tameside scheme

23 January 2013

Award winning regeneration company Urban Splash has received two awards from the Civic Trust – one of which was awarded to a scheme in Tameside.

Longlands Mill, one of the town’s most cherished textile mills, was restored to its former glory when homes were created there by Urban Splash last year. The original 19th Century Mill was restored and the new adjacent Pattern House building created.

The importance of the regeneration efforts have now been recognised by the Civic Trust whose awards celebrate the best architecture, design and art in the UK. The news precedes a ceremony in London on 9th March at which Urban Splash will be officially presented with the award. Another of the company’s schemes in Bristol will also be awarded at the event.

The Urban Splash Chairman Tom Bloxham said: "We are thrilled to have achieved these awards and have our commitment to creating good, sustainable and affordable homes recognised. It is especially encouraging to see recently completed projects such as Lakeshore and Longlands stand out given how short a time they've had to make an impact on housing in this country."

Longlands has given buyers in Tameside exceptional quality in a suburban setting. Homes in the original Mill building have embraced the original features with exposed brickwork and beams running throughout, allowing the creation of spacious homes. The adjacent Pattern House building boasts light, spacious homes. Its colourful exterior is talk of the town; the façade facing the mill features red and orange panels in a nod to the mill building, while the façade facing the countryside features green hues, ensuring the building mirrors its surroundings. Urban Splash has made a conscious effort to ensure that homes are accessible to a broad audience, with shared ownership, rent and private purchase options available to customers. Prices for homes start from £48,500 for a 50% share. Rental homes start at £470 pcm. The company is also offer a 5% deposit contribution to customers.

A restaurant also now forms part of the scheme, giving occupiers another amenity in a town already rich in shops, bars, restaurants and other facilities.

The awards take the Urban Splash trophy cabinet total to 327 accolades. It is the third award for Longlands which was the 2009 recipient of a Manchester Evening News property award and late last year received a What House award.
