Urban Splash announced as preferred developer for Northstowe

21 May 2019

Homes England has selected award-winning regeneration specialist Urban Splash to deliver its first new homes at the new town of Northstowe in Cambridgeshire.

The company has been appointed to create 406 homes in the centre of Northstowe new town, all of which will be built using MMC (Modern Methods of Construction).

Modern Methods of Construction involve building products and methods which require prefabrication and off-site assembly, with the aim of producing better quality homes in less time than traditional building methods.

Urban Splash will work with Homes England and architects Proctor and Matthews to deliver the project.

The development, located around six miles from Cambridge, will be one of the largest MMC sites in the country, with all the homes being constructed off-site at Urban Splash’s factory in Alfreton, Derbyshire.

The announcement strengthens Homes England’s commitment to MMC as a means of increasing building productivity.

Stephen Kinsella, Executive Director, Land at Homes England said: “We’re pleased to have Urban Splash join us at Northstowe and look forward to working with them on the next steps for the development as they seek to secure planning permission.”

Nathan Cornish, director at Urban Splash said: “We are thrilled to be working in Cambridge, a new place for Urban Splash, but one that’s already on the map for interesting and pioneering housing design.

“Our plans are to make well designed, modular Housing more widely available and we are delighted to be working with our long term partners Homes England to make this happen in Cambridge."

Georgina Bignold, director at Proctor & Matthews comments: “The design for the new town quarter of Northstowe will create a unique interpretation of a traditional fenland village inspired by the archaeology and rich history of the area. We are looking forward to working with Urban Splash and Homes England to deliver the new homes using innovative off-site volumetric construction technologies providing homes to suit a range of 21st Century needs and lifestyles and creating a diverse intergenerational community.”

Homes England is leading a long-term project to deliver 8,500 new homes in the centre of Northstowe new town by 2040.

It’s anticipated that work will begin on the 406 Urban Splash homes in spring 2020.
