A beach of dreams for Plymouth!

26 June 2023
A 2 minute read by Adam Willetts

Royal William Yard is steeped in history, and you’ll often find us celebrating the scheme’s heritage through events, or the buildings themselves. This month, the waterfront Yard played host to another fantastic occasion, celebrating 50 years of the South West Coast Path, and in this blog Adam Willetts tells us more.

Royal William Yard in Plymouth is often a vibrant hub of activity, and this week it was ablaze with colour thanks to celebrations for the anniversary of the South West Coast Path – marking 50 years of protecting, caring for and championing what is Britain’s longest National Trail.

It was a joy to see 500 flags planted locally, creating “beach of dreams”. The event also marked the finish of the 35-day-long Trailblazer anniversary walk, with supporters and volunteers entering the Royal William Yard, parading the final 100 flags onto site. They then united the two handcrafted walking sticks which had travelled from each end of the path in Somerset and Dorset and were welcomed by the Lord Lieutenant of Devon.

The incredible anniversary walk covered a total 630 miles of the South West Coast Path, with walkers crossing 230 bridges, 880 gates, 436 stiles, and passing more than 4,000 Coast Path signs passed.

The Yard is an important location on the South West Coast Path, with the organisation based out of the Residence Two building at the scheme. In 2013, our architect partners Gillespie Yunnie designed a new staircase that would connect the Yard to the path, allowing ramblers to walk through the Yard for the first time.
