15 June 2022
A 5 minute read by Tom Bloxham

Welcome to our June edition of Newsplash - a monthly round-up of all things Urban Splash, featuring new homes, scheme launches, commercial news and much more.

This month, we've got exciting news from Swansea as we've signed a 20-year partnership agreement with Swansea Council for the redevelopment of a number of major sites across the city. There's news from Royal William Yard in Plymouth, where we've welcomed a host of new hospitality operators to the area. Back in Manchester, we've got news of a further £28m of acquisitions for our Urban Splash Residential Fund, including 41 apartments at Budenberg HAUS in Altrichnam and there's news of more award winds for our colleagues. Read on to find out more.

Urban Splash and Swansea Council teams at Royal William Yard in Plymouth

Our 20-year partnership agreement with Swansea Council

We have signed a 20-year partnership agreement with Swansea Council, paving the way for a £750m redevelopment of several major sites across the city. Early proposals for the 23-acre Civic Centre site are focused on a new city waterfront district for Swansea, with a mixed-use destination anchored by the beach – offering leisure and hospitality amenities, generous civic spaces and plenty of greenery. Swansea Council leader Cllr Rob Stewart called the partnership a “landmark moment”.

More great amenities confirmed for Royal William Yard in Plymouth

Royal William Yard, our award-winning, historic community in Plymouth, is filled with homes, workspaces, bars, restaurants and galleries – and now there are even more great things on their way. This month we have completed almost 20,000 sq ft of space let to hospitality operators moving into the Yard including Everyman Cinema, Vietnamese street food restaurant Pho – which will open in July – and 4,111 sq ft to South West based burger restaurant Hub box. It means this newest phase of the building is already 95% let ahead of completion!

Budenberg Haus in Altrichman

£28m of acquisitions for the Urban Splash Residential Fund

The Urban Splash Residential Fund has announced deals totalling £28m in sustainable new neighbourhoods across the country. Among them are 32 new homes in Cambridge, as well as a £4m deal on eight homes in Manchester. The fund has also completed a £8m deal to acquire 41 apartments at Budenberg Haus in Altrincham from a major national landlord. Fund manager Akeel Malik said the acquisitions will help the fund on its “ambitious growth trajectory”.

Lister Mills in Bradford

Bradford is the 2025 city of culture

Congratulations to the people of Bradford after the city was named as the 2025 City of Culture. It’s a city close to our heart after we spent many years here transforming Lister Mills; we also supported the bid earlier this year, collaborating with Brick Box as they projected an incredible light show onto Lister’s iconic chimney. Read more about the building, and its role in the City of Culture bid on our blog below.

Park Hill in Sheffield

More awards news

The Royal Town Planning Institute has awarded Park Hill a prestigious accolade and the 20th award to be presented to our Brutalist icon. Congratulations also go to manager of the Urban Splash Residential Fund Akeel Malik, who won an Insider Young Professionals Award, as well as all colleagues involved in the three other awards we’ve won in recent weeks including the Northern Housing Awards, Planning Awards and Roses Awards. We’ve now won 460 accolades which you can see on the link below.

The British Art Show at Irwell Riverside

Arts collective Paradise Works has launched the ‘Triple Decker’ exhibition at our Irwell Riverside neighbourhood in Salford. Described as a “tempting three-tier art event”, it features contemporary visual artists and exhibition previews on each floor. The exhibition runs until 2nd July and you can find out more on the link below.
