People of Park Hill: Andrew Whiteley, Airship

04 March 2022
A 3 minute read by Mark Latham

Andrew has been at Airship, now based at Park Hill, for six years after meeting his new employer on the moors in the Peak District and exchanging details about their line of work which resulted in Andrew joining the team.

“Park Hill reminds me of the Cape of Good Hope - a place where seas collide - it’s a melting pot. The other day I started chatting to a guy who happened to be walking by up here and found out he was an asylum seeker from Sudan. He’d only been here 7 weeks. His journey had taken him from Sudan to North Africa to Europe and Germany - Denmark and then the UK. He’d also spent some time in Calais helping people with the language and also volunteered at a missionary school. It was living proof of Sheffield being Sanctuary City.”

“I bike here every day from Crookes and have just become a new father.”

Once a guide for a blind GB Paralympic Triathlon athlete, he settled in Sheffield for its city life and countryside access. He’s often found in full Lycra cycling around the Peak District with his mates.

Work is busy and when working late Andrew doesn’t feel like you would in an office block. “The office feels like a home.”

Andrew is a regular at South Street Kitchen - twice a day for coffee and lunch - also a fan of the Syrian chef Abir’s breakfasts.
