Hundreds of homes to be created in Birmingham as Port Loop plans are approved
Plans for the first phase of the highly anticipated regeneration of Port Loop, one of the UK’s most important Brownfield sites, have been given the green light by Birmingham City Council – paving the way for hundreds of new homes.
The transformative 43-acre waterfront site in the centre of the city is being delivered by the pioneering Icknield Port Loop LLP, an entity comprising Urban Splash, Places for People, landowners Canal & River Trust and Birmingham City Council.
The LLP’s approved plans for the first phase include the creation of 207 urban, family homes, 90 apartments, a new public park, neighbourhood green and canalside spaces. Speaking on behalf of Places for People and Urban Splash, Adam Willetts said: “We really are thrilled to have secured planning permission and cannot wait to get started on site.
“Once transformed, this area will bring so much to Birmingham; green spaces, parks, waterfront spaces; an incredible urban island community in which people can live, work and play.”
James Lazarus Head of Property Development at Canal & River Trust added: “We are passionate about vibrant waterways that help to transform places and improve people’s lives. To see plans approved on such an important site as this is wonderful and will allow us to open up access to a previously unseen part of our network. It is great news for all involved, for the city and for the people who will ultimately live at this scheme.”
The project partners have been working with award winning Masterplanners Macreanor Lavington, ShedKM and Glenn Howells Architects on the housing and Grant Associates on the public realm designs. Speaking of the designs Dav Bansal, director at Glenn Howells concluded: “Port Loop will truly be a new sustainable neighbourhood for Birmingham which benefits from the canalside network within easy reach of the Edgbaston Reservoir and the city centre.”
The group’s approved masterplan for the entire site includes up to 1,150 new homes, commercial, retail and leisure facilities. It aims to transform this neglected and underused part of Birmingham into a vibrant and family-focused new waterside neighbourhood for the 21st Century.
