Introducing Brick House, a range of brand new homes coming to Port Loop in Birmingham

02 September 2019

The team delivering the regeneration of Port Loop – Birmingham’s newest neighbourhood – have teamed up with award-winning, local firm Glenn Howells Architects to bring a new range of homes to the waterside scheme. Joint venture developers Places for People and Urban Splash have drafted in Glenn’s Digbeth-based team, which is responsible for some city’s most famous structures including the Rotunda, Paradise, Brindleyplace, the Jewellery Quarter and the Custard Factory. Together, they have created the new homes known as ‘Brick House’, which will go on sale on Saturday 21st September.

The 37 mews properties, combine traditional Georgian design features – large windows and an elegant façade – with modern finishes. There are three and four bedroom homes in a mix of two and three storey designs on offer, while each home also has access to a shared garden, helping to encourage people to spend more time outdoors; a key vision for Port Loop.

The launch comes just three months after a show home was unveiled to help promote sales of the first homes at Port Loop – 40 modular Town Houses, most of which are now sold and the first of which are now occupied. The first Brick Houses will be on an adjacent plot overlooking the canal, as Head of residential sales for the JV Guy Ackernley explains: “We are delighted that so many people have taken the decision to join our new neighbourhood at Port Loop and it’s been a real joy to turn our vision into a reality as we’ve welcomed the first residents into their Town Houses this month.

“Now, we’re thrilled to build on that with the launch of the next homes here; our Brick Houses are perfect for families, first time buyers, couples and any customer who wants the perks of suburbia – green space, water, parking and community amenities – while living just a few minutes from the city.”

Glenn Howells, who has also advised on the masterplan for Port Loop, added: “I’m passionate about Birmingham and I’m passionate about this development which brings a disused part of our city back to life.

“Our Brick House designs are an intended juxtaposition to the Town Houses already on site; we’ve used a traditional brick aesthetic to reflect the heritage of the area. Our team and the developers also had a shared consensus to surround the homes with green spaces – a shared garden and the Port Loop park – something inspired by communities in Denmark where children are known to be the happiest in the world.

“I hope we can replicate that here as more people move into this exciting new community.”

The launch comes just weeks after the Port Loop park was unveiled, with more than 1000 visitors attending on the day. Guy concluded: “Port Loop is raising standards for new neighbourhoods and was recently described as the most ambitious development in the UK. We’re proud to be delivering something that throws out the rule book; after all what more would you expect from life on an island?”

Surrounded by the Birmingham and Worcester Canal, every house at Port Loop has easy access to the water where people can enjoy canalside walks into the centre of Birmingham. Moving forward, Port Loop will also host various waterside events.

Anyone can attend the event on Saturday 21st September. The homes will be available to buy under the Government’s Help to Buy scheme.

Port Loop is being delivered by developers Urban Splash and Places for People, alongside the charity, Canal & River Trust, and Birmingham City Council. Building on the launch of Brick House, plans are currently being put in place to launch a new social and cultural hub in 100,000 sq ft of former industrial space at Port Loop.
