KID ACNE to host first Sheffield solo exhibition in five years at S1 Artspace, Park Hill

12 September 2019

Kid Acne returns to his home town with his first Sheffield solo exhibition in five years. Having exhibited work from Los Angeles to Beijing, Kid Acne has produced a new body of work called HAVE A WORD, which focusses on his iconic text-based SLOGAN pieces and for the first time linking his art and music through the exploration of lyrics and typography.

The exhibition runs from September 13 - 28 hosted by S1 Artspace with a full indoor / outdoor experience. Kid Acne's work will be on show in the entire gallery space and will partner as well a dozen exterior murals within Park Hill - notably the largest Grade 2 listed building in Europe. These will be able to be viewed at specific times during the exhibition period.

Kid Acne says: “Having made art and music in various guises over the years, these seemingly disparate elements have generally occupied unrelated spaces in my studio practice, despite both being an equal driving force in my creative output. The aim of the exhibition is to connect the dots through the exploration of lyrics and lettering utilising limited resources and a more DIY mindset.”

Coinciding with the exhibition sees the release of Kid Acne's long awaited fourth studio album, (appropriately titled HAVE A WORD), available through Lex Projects, who began as a subsidiary of Sheffield's WARP Records in 2001. The record is the result of 18 months of trans-atlantic collaboration with Chicago-based producer, Spectacular Diagnostics and was recorded and mixed in Sheffield by Dean Honer.

Lyrics and song titles from the album have informed the entire content of the show, adorning canvases, prints and murals - covering a wide range of topics, from regional dialect and mythology, to back-handed compliments and social media.

The exhibition is kindly supported by Urban Splash and Sheffield Hallam alumni programme.

Orla McGrath, Marketing Director at Urban Splash said: “Urban Splash have long been admirers of Kid Acne and he has had a relationship with Park Hill for over a decade now. We understand that making successful places means valuing the contributions of all types of people, including pioneering artists, so we’re proud to be able to support this exhibition that uses the Park Hill landscape so impressively.”

Head of Development and Alumni Relations, James Johnston said: “Sheffield is a place which has played a part in the lives of thousands of alumni across the world and we are proud to partner with Kid Acne on his new exhibition which celebrates the local dialect and ‘Sheffield-isms’ we all know and cherish. As a part this partnership and as an alumnus of the University Kid Acne will be working with current students through workshops and career advice supporting and advising our students by sharing his expertise over the next year.

Pamela Bowman, principal lecturer in visual communication at Sheffield Hallam University, said: “I am very much looking forward to the launch of Kid Acne’s exhibition, he is a fantastic Sheffield Hallam fine art graduate who has had a long running relationship with the University and our courses, he continues to support our students and projects. He has an outstanding international reputation and is very visible throughout Sheffield with his unique approach to murals.”
