New investment will bring 182 new homes to Sheffield

03 April 2014

Award winning regeneration company Urban Splash is working with Places for People on a joint venture basis to deliver £17million investment into the next phase of development of Park Hill.

The building, a Sheffield icon and one of Europe’s largest listed buildings, is undergoing a transformational development and this investment into the second phase will create another 182 homes for the city alongside a new nursery and workspaces.

In 2012, award winning regeneration company Urban Splash launched the first phase of homes for sale in the 13-storey building, which is now sold out. The company’s managing director Simon Gawthorpe said: “We are delighted to unveil the latest plans for Park Hill and the new residential opportunities that we’ll be launching there.

“We were overwhelmed when we launched the first phase in 2012; more than 1,000 people came to see the show apartments when we launched them and they have all now been sold. I have high hopes for phase two and look forward to welcoming more people into this re-emerging community.”

The phase two works to the Grade II Listed building come following Urban Splash and Places for People’s decision to work on the project on a joint venture basis last year. Places for People is one of the UK’s largest landlords, has assets of more than £3 billion and manages a portfolio of more than 143,000 homes. Their Group Director of Business Development Mary Parsons said: “There is a genuine synergy between ourselves and Urban Splash as we have a shared passion for delivering high quality, sustainable housing. Our first joint venture collaboration at Park Hill will help us achieve this together.”

Together, Urban Splash and Places for People will work with longstanding partners Great Places Housing Group, English Heritage, the Homes and Communities Agency and Sheffield City Council and their Councillor Harry Harpham, Cabinet Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods, said: “Park Hill is a flagship development in Sheffield, both because it’s so visible from many parts of the city and it has such a rich and fascinating history.

“We are delighted that the next phase of works is underway and that it continues to re-emerge as a modern place for Sheffield’s people to live and work.”

Added Matthew Harrison, chief executive of Great Places Housing Group: “This is another exciting milestone for all involved in this regeneration project and helps us realise our collective vision of creating a vibrant mixed-use community.”

Concluded Rob Pearson Head of Area at the Homes and Communities Agency stated: “Park Hill is a vitally important project for Sheffield and it is great to see the momentum continuing. HCA will continue to work with the partners to ensure the plans includes affordable homes for the City.”

The latest news comes following an exciting 2013 for Park HIll which saw its first residents move into their homes and businesses including creative agencies Uber and Human take commercial units at the scheme. Park Hill also won a number of awards - taking its total to 10 - and was nominated for the UK’s biggest architectural accolade the Stirling Prize, a testament to the design of the scheme courtesy of award-winning architects Hawkins\Brown and Studio Egret West.

The 182 new homes comprise 85 one-bedroom, 93 two-bedroom and four three-bedroom properties. Details of the sales process and timings for these properties will be announced later this year.
