News Café to open at Royal William Yard
A vibrant new dining experience is coming to Plymouth this summer, bringing a taste of Miami Beach to Royal William Yard. The News Café is a new arrival to the city, offering everything from coffee to cocktails, early-morning breakfasts to late-night nibbles, and everything in between.
Taking its inspiration from the legendary News Café in Miami beach – which grew from being a newsstand and café in the 1980s into a must-visit destination for everything from brunch to sundowners – its Plymouth namesake plans to bring the same vision to the West Country waterfront. With pastel tones and Art Deco décor, the venue will echo the vibe of Miami’s iconic South Beach.
Situated in a sweet spot; the News Café will overlook the water on two sides and boast a sun-soaked terrace for drinking and dining outdoors by Royal William Yard’s Marina. Based in the Mills Bakery building, inside the News Café will be a bustling bar, a relaxed dining area, and an open kitchen with a large pizza oven at it centre.
The News Café plans to grow a close-knit community, with a dedicated local newspaper, regular offers and events for customers, and as a place that groups can meet and feel at home. Those keen to be in the know can sign up to its VIP waiting list, win prizes and be the first to receive updates about its grand opening.
Part of a grander vision, the independently owned restaurant is one of two News Café eateries opening this summer, with the other launching in Salisbury. This is the brainchild of local business owner, Mike Turner, who brings 40 years’ retail and marketing experience to this new venture. Mike has a longstanding connection to Plymouth, from his school days right through to establishing multiple successful businesses in the city over the decades – including the Six O’Clock Club professional network.
Generating more than 40 new local jobs, there are a range of employment opportunities available at the News Café. Those keen to begin or further a career in hospitality can apply for management, kitchen, and front of house roles in the coming weeks.
Mike Turner from the News Café, said: “We look forward to bringing our new all-day dining and relaxed lounging offer to Plymouth. From early-morning dining to late-night drinks, we will offer it all under one roof and are excited to build a brilliant new community. The News Café draws inspiration from the lively backdrop of Miami Beach, and Royal William Yard has that cool waterfront setting, with a unique style and personality.”
Emma Gardiner from Urban Splash, added: “For almost 20 years Urban Splash has invested in Royal William Yard, creating a buzzing place for independent businesses and national loved brands alike. We’re thrilled to welcome News Café, whose offering will add to the Yard’s vibrancy and give people another reason to visit and enjoy the area.
“We’ve nurtured Royal William Yard into a leading destination for exciting enterprises; the News Café is a perfect addition to the blend of businesses that have made this their home.”
