Urban Splash commences early construction phases at Civic Centre
Award-winning regeneration company Urban Splash has commenced works at Plymouth’s Civic Centre.
The next six months will see the developer take the building back to its concrete frame, paving the way for the full restoration of the Grade 2* listed building, with plans to transform the lower floors into flexible office space, with the upper stories featuring 144 homes.
Adam Willetts of Urban Splash said: “We are delighted to have reached this stage. The Civic Centre is an ambitious and complex project, and we have adopted a considered approach as we sensitively restore this building and bring it back into use for the people of Plymouth.”
Urban Splash has been working with partners Plymouth City Council who helped the project secure just over £10 million after successfully pitching for Future High Streets funding.
The restoration of the Civic Centre is part of a plan to bring more living space into the City Centre along with more exciting and creative commercial and events space.
The Future High Streets fund is not just about transforming buildings but enticing people to live, work and socialise in the city centre and to make it an attractive location.
Under the plan, the Civic Centre restoration would involve 144 private residential apartments within the tower as well as retail and a creative hub space for entrepreneurs to work and trade.
Urban Splash has had a presence in Plymouth for 15 years, in which time it has successfully restored Royal William Yard, redeveloping the site’s Grade I and II Listed buildings, to create a thriving, award-winning waterfront community.
The redevelopment of the Civic Centre is in part funded through Plymouth’s Future High Street Fund, with around £10.5m grant funding awarded through the Government’s Department of Levelling Up. The build programme for the Civic Centre will run through to early 2025.
