Urban Splash install new iconic staircase in the development of Park Hill, Sheffield

    18 March 2011

Urban Splash and partners have today reached a key milestone in the construction at Park Hill as the installation of the new 29m tall, iconic mirrored helical staircase began.

Urban Splash Chairman Tom Bloxham MBE was joined by Karl Tupling representing the HCA, Matthew Harrison, deputy chief executive of Great Places Housing Group, and Jan Fitzgerald, Regeneration Programme Director fromSheffield City Council to witness the new 70 tonne, mirrored helical staircase being installed through the core of the Grade II* Listed Park Hill.

A 250 tonne crane was fully extended to reach the full height of the building and the process of lowering the 168 step spiral staircase in to the cut through from the roof void began.

Tom Bloxham said “It’s fantastic to be seeing some of the new design elements being installed in Park Hill. The staircase will be a key feature that will be visible from the city and adds an extra sparkle back to Park Hill. It’s great that even in this climate we have maintained momentum in developing Park Hill by working in partnership with the HCA, Great Places, English Heritage and Sheffield City Council. I can’t wait to show off the scheme this summer when we open our marketing suite and new show apartments. Each and every apartment is arranged over two floors with generous space and south facing living rooms, many with balconies. This, along with its amazing entrance and great landscaping, will make Park Hill a great place to live.”

Karl Tupling, from the HCA said “This is great news and helps keep the momentum going on this project. The staircase will bring the completion of the first phase closer and is an example of how innovative design will act as a draw to people who will want to live here.”

Matthew Harrison, deputy chief executive of Great Places Housing Group said: “This is another significant event in the rebirth of Park Hill and the installation of the staircase is a striking symbol of the progress that is being made on the iconic development.”

Jan Fitzgerald, Sheffield City Council’s Regeneration Programme Director, said: “Today is an exciting milestone in the regeneration of Park Hill, and it’s great to see the project progressing in such a striking way. This really gives a flavour of the look and feel that the final development will have.”

Councillor Penny Baker, Sheffield City Council's Cabinet Member for Housing, Regeneration and Planning, said: “This staircase is a great visual sign of the progress being made at Park Hill. The regeneration work is really exciting and modern, while remaining true to the site's roots in the community. Things are really gathering momentum on the project now, and I can't wait to see the next steps.”

The Grade II* Listed building, is part of a long term redevelopment programme by Urban Splash who are currently working on developing a range of affordable homes and commercial spaces within the building. Park Hill will have amazingly spacious one and two bedroom, duplex, dual aspect apartments with floor to ceiling glazing allowing the best city views Sheffield has to offer and beyond to the Peak District. Homes and commercial units will be available to buy at Park Hill from this summer, with the first people able move into their new homes at Park Hill in 2012.
