Urban Splash wins Gold Medal for environmental best practice

16 June 2010

Award winning regeneration company Urban Splash has added to its roll of honour today with another award for the redevelopment of Mills Bakery in Plymouth.

The Grade I listed building, which forms part of Royal William Yard, a former Naval victualling yard overlooking Plymouth Sound, was presented the Gold Award for the Built Environment at this week’s Green Apple Awards in London.

The award is the ninth award to have been presented to Urban Splash for its efforts at Royal William Yard and comes just a month after the company received the prestigious RIBA Award for Architecture for Mills Bakery, the third building to have been redeveloped at the scheme.

Urban Splash Chairman Tom Bloxham MBE added: "I am delighted with the news of our latest awards success at Royal William Yard. The scheme has been a challenging one but the recognition we are receiving for our work at the site is testament to our efforts."

Royal William Yard is now home to a thriving mixed use community offering a mix of apartments, restaurant space and office space and giving people in Plymouth a new place to live, work and play. The site has recently been bolstered by the arrival of national restaurant chain Loungers and the imminent launch of a Ministry of Defence museum which will open in Mills Bakery next month

The Green Apple Awards are now in their sixteenth year and attracted more than 500 nominations this year. They are organised by The Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non-activist, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world.
