South Street Kitchen All Hallows Tasting Menu – who knew?

04 November 2022
A 3 minute read by Surriya Falconer

Oh my – I really wasn’t expecting the journey of taste myself and my three companions were about to embark on at South Street Kitchen at Park Hill on Saturday. Think I need to list the menu…….who would have thought the humble parsnip could be elevated to such a culinary delight or that an artistically presented artichoke dish could look as good as it tasted.

Spelt soda bread, Guinness butter
Jerusalem artichoke terrine, spiced apple, walnuts
Agave roast parsnips, sesame, chilli
Crispy wild mushroom polenta, celeriac, roast garlic, nasturtium
Salt baked beetroot, borscht, horseradish, fresh curds
Butternut squash tart, pear, chestnuts
Chai spiced panna cotta, barmbrack crumble

So the humble and beautifully textured soda bread was served warm and now I want to buy that Guinness butter. The apple and spice married really well with the artichoke, the parsnips left a taste of sesame and chilli tang on the tongue, the mushroom dish was a warm croquette like dish that burst with texture and flavour and the beetroot was a refreshing interlude between courses. The pastry on the butternut squash tart was crisp and sweet and chestnut crumb balanced perfectly. The perfect seasonal menu finale was a nod to the Winter season ahead with a touch of yuletide tastes. The Chai spiced panna cotta set against the immense barmbrack crumble with mixed spiced and favoured fruits with cinnamon and cardamom were delightful partners.

And drinks – I was driving so I had a 0.5% lager and the most yummy non alcoholic cocktail called Mock Greedy Boy that included pomegranate juice, fresh lemon, cardamon syrup and soda – full of flavour and I didn’t miss the alcohol at all!!! There was a flight option for each course which was tempting but in the end the group chose a bottle (well ended up being a couple) of the Spanish Green Fish, Verdejo with confirmation of our choice being an appropriate accompaniment by the attentive and knowledgeable front of house staff. The friendly and relaxed team added to our night out.

What a lovely evening. By the end of our seven courses we felt nicely full and our taste buds were zinging. Great value too – we were there for three hours chatting and eating away.

Looking forward to returning to tackle more tasting menus and the Christmas buffet! Check out what’s on offer at South Street Kitchen.
